Tallow is suet fat from an animal gently rendered to remove any impurities.
It closely mimics our skin’s natural oils, which is why it absorbs so well and feels so nourishing.
It’s been used in skincare for generations and is rich in naturally occurring vitamins.
Simple, low-tox, and beautifully effective.
Yes — this is actually why Smudge Tallow exists. After having my own children, I wanted something simple and gentle enough for their skin. Our products contain no synthetic fragrances, preservatives, or unnecessary extras. We always suggest patch testing first, especially for little ones.
Many of our return customers use Smudge Tallow to support skin prone to dryness, eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, and irritation. While we don’t claim to treat or cure medical conditions, our customers often tell us their skin feels calmer, more hydrated, and better supported after switching to tallow-based skincare. We always suggest a patch test when trying something new.
No — tallow is not vegan, as it comes from animals.
We deeply respect those who choose a vegan lifestyle for ethical reasons. For us, using tallow is also an ethical choice — it allows the whole animal to be honoured and nothing to go to waste.
Our tallow comes from pasture-raised lambs, and we believe using every part is a more thoughtful, respectful way to care for animals and the land.
Not when used correctly. Tallow is rich, so a little goes a long way.
Smudge Tallow is whipped to a light, cloud-like texture, when warmed between your fingers and applied sparingly, it absorbs beautifully into the skin rather than sitting on top.
Most people are surprised by how soft and nourished their skin feels — not greasy. If your skin feels greasy, then you are using way too much.
Lamb tallow is naturally softer and lighter than beef tallow, which many people find absorbs more easily into the skin.
It has a finer texture and a milder scent, making it especially lovely for facial skincare and sensitive skin.
For us, it also reflects what we raise and what’s available locally — keeping things small, thoughtful, and true to our farm.
We raise our lambs on pasture, letting them feed naturally. Sometimes they need a little extra — during drought, lambing, or weaning — and that’s okay. For us, it’s always about healthy, happy lambs, not strict categories or labels.
Use tallow on your face as the last step to lock in moisture.
For the body, warm a small amount between your fingers and massage into clean skin.
Reapply as desired.
Yes! Tallow is gentle and nourishing, and because it’s so similar to our skin’s natural oils, it can actually help balance rather than clog. Many of our customers with acne-prone skin have found it helps calm and support their skin — but as always, start slowly and patch test to see how your skin responds.
Just keep it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Because it’s a natural product, it may soften or firm up depending on the weather — that’s totally normal.
This one of our most commonly asked question. Our tallow is gently and carefully rendered to remove all the impurities. Our BARE range is as barebones, and natural as it comes designed for our ultra-sensitive skin and our 'Go hard or Go home' low-tox friends. it does carry a subtle natural smell. Our other lines are infused with florals and essential oils which create their own scents. All smells tend to subside within minutes of application.
Smudge Tallow is a little different because we use lamb tallow, not beef, and we raise our own lambs right here on our farm. When we source suet from other farmers, it’s always from local, ethical farms with the same values we hold. We render everything ourselves, so nothing comes pre-made or processed, and we only include ingredients that have a real, beneficial purpose — no fillers, no unnecessary extras. It’s simple, honest skincare made with care from start to finish.
